The giant and colossal squid.

Imagine you are in a ship hundreds of years ago. You are looking out from the quarter deck into the sea. It is stormy, and the boat rocks precariously side to side, threatening to tip over and sent you you and your shipmates to a watery death. Suddenly, a huge slimy beast with long, dull pink tentacles throws itself onto the ship. You notice the long, sharp hooks on its tentacles and the crushing, tearing beak. Then a slightly smaller version comes on too. It doesn't have the hooks on its tentacles though. Instead it has sharp suckers like a pizza cutter.

"KRAKENS!" Everyone screams.

The Kraken is a legendary beast that attacks ships. This may have evolved from our friends the giant and colossal squid. :) Here are pictures of what the Kraken was thought to look like.

Scary, huge monster. Eats ships and looks like an octopus or a squid.

Fake and true:

There is a huge squid: TRUE

It is a monster meant to attack ships and drown people: FALSE

It does have hooks on its tentacles and a sharp beak: True

It does have suckers like a sharp pizza cutter: True

It is real: Slightly true

The giant and colossal squids are some of the largest creatures on the planet. Just look at this chart!

These squids are very rare. The colossal squid has an unknown length in the chart, but several have been found, and dissected. They are pretty similar, except look at their tentacles:

The giant squid tentacles (left) have those sharp pizza cutter suckers I was talking about. The colossal squid (right) has hooks. Also the colossal squid is bigger. These squid have also been suspected (proabably false) to attack sperm whales. WHALES. But it was proably just prey for the whale and the whale just attacked the squid, not the opposite. Usually the whale won, but look at these marks a squid may have done before it was eaten:

And little more is known about the squids, but here are some ending videos of the squids!

  1. Wow! That's amazing. I went on a roller-coaster called Kraken once. It was at SeaWorld! Those squids look scary, I read about them in NG Kids Infopedia once and that Squid V.S Sperm Whale video was awesome!
